Motivational Interviewing

MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING

Join WarriorNOW for a basic overview of Motivational Interviewing with Tom Joyce, MA, Training Coordinator at WarriorNOW.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Learn how to help someone resolve ambivalent feelings and find the internal motivation to change. WarriorNOW follows the Whole Health approach to setting goals and making changes, and this course will expand upon the listening and questioning aspect of the Whole Health model.

**Coming In May 2022, WarriorNOW will host an in-person Advanced M.I. training which will allow time for vingettes and real-life practice**

BIOGRAPHY: Thomas Joyce, the Training Coordinator at WarriorNOW, has a M.A. in history. After completing his master’s degree, Thomas joined Teach for America. He has been a secondary teacher for eight years in a variety of states and settings, although his primary focus is Title 1 schools.

Mentor Training: Neuropsychology 101: How do substances change your brain? (Part 3 of 3)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This training will look at the historical milestones which have influenced perceptions of substance use and the impact on today’s user.

Nspire Today, LLC was founded by Thea L. Wessel, LPC, LAC, MAC, NCAAC, ADS, PhD Student who specializes in mental health counseling with an integral and transpersonal approach in support of her clients’ whole-person development.

Thea is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC), and Nationally certified through the National Association of Addiction Professionals as a Master Addictions Counselor (MAC) and National Certified Adolescent Addictions Counselor (NCAAC) with over 10 years of experience in the mental health field.  She holds a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a M.A. in Forensic Psychology from the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Professional Psychology. Thea has additionally completed all coursework and is currently working toward achieving a Ph.D. in Integral & Transpersonal Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies, where her research focus is centered on the impact of moral injury as related to behavior and substance use. 

Thea has been actively involved with providing mental health and substance abuse treatment services for individuals in the correctional system, training and supervising peers and future counselors, collaborating with professionals and organizations throughout Colorado and nationally, as well as maintaining a private practice where she supports a diverse clientele. She is a past president of the Colorado Association of Addiction Professionals (CAAP) and is a current board member.  She is an adjunct professor at the University of Denver and Metro State University and previously taught at Colorado State University.

Jan 22, 2022 9am - 1130am TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury)

Join WarriorNOW for an overview of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) with Liam Donevan, Criminal Justice System Program Manager at the Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A subject matter expert will present on the causes, signs and symptoms of brain injuries, statistics, best practices for working with survivors, brain injury screening and identification tools, and services BIAC offers.

BIOGRAPHY: Liam Donevan is a Program Manager in the Criminal Justice System with the Brain Injury Allaince of Colorado.

Join WarriorNOW for an overview of UA’s (urinalysis) followed by Q&A with Angela Pappas, Probation Supervisor of the 18th Judicial Veteran Treatment Court.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A subject matter expert will present on the logistics of UAs (the call in system, testing schedule and locations, etc.) and then open it up for questions about testing and results.

BIO: Angela joined the 18th Judicial District Probation Department in January 2012, initially serving as a Probation Officer for both the juvenile and adult mental health caseloads and transitioned to Probation Supervisor in March 2018. She currently supervises the Wellness, Recovery, Sobriety, and Veterans Treatment Court programs as well as the Economic Crime Unit. She is an active member of the Health & Wellness Committee in the 18th and very excited about some of the trainings and initiatives being implemented to better support workplace wellness. Prior to her work with probation, she was a Mental Health Specialist with Arapahoe/Douglas Mental Health Network at the Juvenile Assessment Center and an Adolescent Caseworker with Jefferson County Human Services. Angela graduated from the University of Denver with a Masters Degree in Forensic Psychology and completed her undergraduate degree at Marquette University majoring in Psychology and minoring in Criminology and Law Studies. She feels lucky to be working in Problem Solving Courts and being a part of the change and success not often seen when mental health and addiction intersects with the criminal justice system.
